Tunnels are to provide a solution to the unending traffic jams on Los Angeles' freeways: the metro network of the southern Californian metropolis is currently being expanded so that from 2009 passengers on the "Gold Line" will be able to travel out of the city to the Pacific beaches. The trains must be protected against firedamp, which is likely to be present in the tunnels owing to the deposits of petroleum throughout the whole of the Los Angeles basin.

Two TBMs , "Lola" and "Vicki", equipped with earth pressure balance shields, bored two tunnels, from February to December 2006, under the districts to the east of the city center. They were completely protected from firedamp, from the engine to the valves and switches. A closed horizontal screw conveyor on the trailer conveyed the excavated material containing hydrocarbons to the end of the machine, which had better ventilation, where it was filled into wagons. These wagons were also used to store the excavated material temporarily, when the trucks were held up in traffic jams.
