The new urban motorway M-30 was planned to relieve major traffic congestion in Madrid from 2007. Its construction entailed boring a 3.65 kilometer three-lane road tunnel through demanding geological conditions of clay and solid gypsum, with ascending gradients of 5 per cent. This was a project that called for the utmost care and precision, because, after all, a densely populated area,  rail and metro tunnels had to be tunneled under at distances of only 6.5 meters without causing any "side effects".

What is currently the world's largest earth pressure balance shield, with an innovative mechanical design, was used to carry out the project. The inner cutting wheel (ø 7 m) and coaxial outer cutting wheel (ø 15,20 m) are mounted at the same working plane, enabling both machines to operate in a clockwise and anticlockwise direction, independently of each other. Crucial to the project's success, apart from the machines' design, was the project management: the project was completed well within the tight timescale set, with breakthrough for the large tunnel being achieved four months earlier than planned.
