In the harbour area of the Austrian city of Linz, a sewer tunnel had to pass beneath the Donau River. The client opted for an AVN1600TB to drive the 952 meter long tunnel with a gradient of 10 meters through loam, sand, marl and silt. Not an easy job because cutting wheels get stuck very easily in the sticky ground.
To prevent this, a new type of medium pressure nozzle system was used. This cuts up the clay blocks as they are dug out, so that the cutting wheel does not stick and the excavation chamber remains free. As such it was possible to press on with the work from end September 2006: by mid December 2006, the tunnel was completed only two and a half months later.
