Schwanau, Germany, April 12, 2010. Herrenknecht AG is the technology and market leader in mechanized tunnelling for all ground conditions and all diameters from 0.10 to 19 meters. Under the umbrella of the Herrenknecht Group, a team of innovative specialists has formed to provide upon request integrated solutions in the area of tunnel construction with project-specific equipment and service packages. The company also produces state-of-the-art deep drilling rigs that drill down to depths of 6,000 meters as well as plants for the exploitation of shallow geothermal energy.

TRAFFIC TUNNELLING.
To keep people and goods on the move in the face of an increasing world population and continuing urbanization, the way ahead for new efficient traffic infrastructures leads underground. In the year 2009, construction companies have driven a total of more than 280 kilometers of new tunnel using Herrenknecht large-diameter machines (>4.20 meters). Almost 100 projects were completed successfully in 2009. Four Herrenknecht Gripper TBMs are boring and securing 85 kilometers of tunnel in Switzerland for the main tubes of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. In 2017, the longest railway tunnel in the world is planned to go into operation, leading to marked improvements in travel and transport opportunities in Europe.
UTILITY TUNNELLING.
As the world's population grows, the need for underground supply tunnels also increases; this is true for threshold and developing countries as much as for modern urban centers. Around 850 Herrenknecht Utility Tunnelling Machines are in operation around the world constructing or laying water and wastewater systems, gas and oil pipelines, as well as conduits for electricity, the Internet and telephone lines. In addition to established methods such as Horizontal Drilling Technology (HDD), Herrenknecht also provides innovative technologies like the Pipe Thruster for the underground laying of pipelines. It provides, for example, additional push and pull forces for particularly long drills and large pipe diameters. In combination with Microtunnelling technology and using the Direct Pipe© method, the Pipe Thruster allows the trenchless installation of a prefabricated pipeline together with the simultaneous construction of the required drill hole in one single, continuous working operation.

INNOVATIVE DIRECTIONS.
With innovations in machine technology, Herrenknecht continues to push forward the construction of underground infrastructure. The mechanized construction of sloping shafts (Ø > 10 meters) with a gradient of 30°, vertical shaft construction down to depths of 80 meters as well as the expansion and renewal of existing traffic tunnels can be carried out in a way that is both economically efficient and reliable from a planning point of view using Herrenknecht equipment. In cooperation with the Rio Tinto mining group, Herrenknecht engineers have developed an innovative shaft boring system (SBS) which can drill shafts with depths of up to 2,000 meters and diameters of up to 12 meters, in order to develop raw materials deposits quickly and safely.
ALL AROUND TUNNELLING SOLUTIONS.
The need for integrated solutions is rising due to the growing requirements presented by increasingly complex and demanding underground infrastructure projects. A team of innovative specialists has formed under the umbrella of the Herrenknecht Group. They provide separation plants, conveyor belt systems, guidance and navigation systems as well as segment moulds all the way to turnkey segment production plants. The range of products also includes services in the area of technical consultancy, planning and supervision for tunnelling projects as well as personnel solutions to complement construction site crews on a temporary basis. With 58 companies worldwide, Herrenknecht can offer its customers support close to the project site.
BAUMA 2010.
In Hall C3, 315/512 – with a booth area of 773m² – Herrenknecht will be presenting mechanized tunnelling technology for Traffic Tunnelling and Utility Tunnelling, project and innovation highlights as well as the range of technical products and services offered by the Group companies. In the open-air area F7, 703/12 (440 m²), the equipment on exhibit will be showing new technologies in pipeline construction, the innovative Direct Pipe© method as well as the possibilities for exploiting shallow geothermal energy.
