Flexible and Simple Machine Technology.

Shields with partial face excavation produce excellent tunnelling performances in a wide variety of geological conditions and in varying diameters of tunnels. They are directly controllable by the operator, simple to handle and extremely versatile in use. Furthermore, they are inexpensive to install and economical in use.

The speed with which excavation components can be changed demonstrates the outstanding versatility of the Herrenknecht shields with partial face excavation. Both excavator and road header can be fitted to the same basic machine. Changing them is both easy and quick. Dependent on the diameter and tunnelling length, the section of tunnel can be advanced either by pipe jacking or by the installation of segments. The standardized range includes all current diameters, and customized project solutions are available on request.

Excavator

Excavating with excavators in loose soils has proved its worth hundreds of times. Dependent on the characteristics of the ground, the universal digger can be fitted with an excavation shovel, bucket tooth or hydraulic hammer and these can be changed quickly and easily. The excavated soil is removed on conveyor belts or scraper conveyors.

Road Headers

Using this technique, tunnels can be economically driven in rocks with an unconfined compressive strength of up to 80 Mpa. Excavation is carried out by a longitudinal cutting head fitted with a round shaft chisel. The excavated material is removed by the revolving auger conveyor.
