These days, tunnels are indispensable features of railroad systems. Countries with mountain massifs and ranges are especially reliant on tunnels for rapid links between towns and with other countries. Most tunnelling work was carried out in the late 19th century and is now in serious need of refurbishment.  Distances between track center lines are too small for today's needs. This significantly slows down rail traffic because the maximum permitted speed is always a function of the distance between track center lines. In addition, because they were built with natural rock, these tunnels are close to the end of their service lives.

There is no need to build new tunnels and alter track alignments because existing tunnels can continue to be used to their full capacity for all train types. The solution to the problem is to ream the old tunnel and reclad it with segments in the same operation. Single-track train operation is possible throughout the construction work because a protective mantle separates the working area from the track in use.  Refurbishment increases both tunnel diameter and the distance between track center lines. This involves cladding the tunnel walls with concrete segments and making the whole tunnel compliant with European safety standard EBO10. The effect is to extend the life of the tunnel by decades.
