Herrenknecht's refurbishment solution can upgrade a tunnel built years ago and now showing its age - and improve safety at the same time. Concrete facings on walls and ceilings are cleaned and partially removed to prepare them for an application of shotcrete followed by a new fire protective cladding consisting of specially prepared shotcrete. This coating is permeated with a bright color additive to improve the light conditions in the tunnel and to create a psychologically positive effect to counteract the fears engendered by entering a darkened tunnel environment. The refurbishment is fully mechanized and uses five mobile units. These are quick to assemble and are suitable for use in tunnels with various diameters.
