Urban infrastructures, such as public transport systems and multi-story car parks, are increasingly to be found below ground. The construction work on metro network extensions and underground garages poses problems because traffic routes cannot be closed while construction is in progress. The restricted space often rules out major underground construction projects.

Vertical Shaft Sinking Machines (VSM) from Herrenknecht create considerable time and space advantages over conventional shaft sinking. In comparison with the conventional shaft construction method, a building site facility for a VSM33.000 requires less above-ground space. Excavation, lining and sinking go hand in hand - everything with one machine. The optimized VSM work processes make considerable cuts in working time as for example with shafts created by excavation or blasting.
