Innovative crossings under rivers and straits.

Mobility has priority - both on and under the water.

Rivers and straits have a severely restrictive effect on the mobility of both people and goods - especially in major cities and conurbations. Not only mobility is affected. The opportunities for growth and development within a region are hampered as well. Crossings both above and beneath the water restrict shipping. Blocking off a shipping lane often has a drastic effect on inland shipping movements because there are simply no alternative routes.

TIMBY - efficiency through speed and low space requirements.

The TIMBY tunnelling method (patented by Bouygues Travaux Publics) is based on a tunnel boring machine developed by Herrenknecht and which uses tried and tested technologies. TIMBY (Tunnel IMmersed BY BTP) has considerable advantages over conventional tunnel immersion. The TIMBY method takes up very little space, is cost-efficient, ecological and hardly restricts shipping at all. The tunnel tubes are constructed piece by piece on the river bed, allowing shipping to pass overhead unhindered.

Advantages of Timby.

  • low space requirements
  • hardly any restrictions on other traffic
  • short construction times
  • minimum environmental impact
  • comparatively low costs

Areas of Application

  • crossings beneath rivers and straits
  • transportation tunnels for subways, railroads and road traffic
  • segmented construction method
