Herrenknecht Cutter Tools can take it hard.

Reliability, endurance and service.

The resilience, efficiency and reliability of cutters, also known as cutter rolls or disks, have a considerable impact on the economic efficiency of mechanized tunnelling. Unlike any other excavation tool, cutters are exposed to hugely varying, and often extreme conditions during the tunnelling operation. In solid rock, temperatures can reach 50o C and hardnesses can be up to 350Mpa. Also, water pressures, dust or sand have an enormous impact on cutter rolls and their components. Naturally, they must perform reliably, however extreme the conditions.

All geological conditions pose challenges at different points for the resilience of the cutters and their 20 individual components. In loose rock and mixed soils, the ambient conditions are often extremely wearing for the whole case. Tunnelling in high water pressures is extremely stressful for the bearing seals. The properties of the materials of which the cutters are made are paramount in hard rock and are a crucial factor affecting the life cycle of the tool. The properties of the high-alloy tool steel used for them must combine the right proportions of hardness and toughness. Ultimately, what counts is the right mix, both of material composition and cutter manufacture.

Quality based on experience.

We lead the way in tunnelling technology and have long experience in the manufacture of cutter tools for small and large bore diameters - all of which guarantees resilience and high tunnelling performance. Cutter shops set up right on the construction site have all the important spare parts in stock so that cutter rolls are ready for use as rapidly as possible. If required, excavation tools can also be reconditioned in Herrenknecht cutter manufacturing sites in the USA, Switzerland and in China.

Unlike dedicated cutter manufacturers, we see the drilling tools in connection with cutter head design and the work processes associated with retooling. Having the cutter heads and the cutter tools in use optimally designed to work together simplifies maintenance work - but not only that. Ultimately, this has a positive effect on economic efficiency as well.

WORLD RECORD ALONG THE ENTIRE ROUTE. FOURTH HERRENKNECHT TBM SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES THE LAST GOTTHARD TUNNEL SECTION.

Following final breakthrough in the western tubes, the two 57-kilometer main tubes of the Gotthard Base Tunnel are now fully driven. On March 23, 2011, miners commenced final excavation of the world's longest railway tunnel with the Herrenknecht TBM "Heidi" (diameter 9.43 m).
