AVN-Machines: The Generalists.

Automatic tunnelling machines with slurry material removal (AVN machines) are remote controlled from a control container. The full face excavation machines work on the entire face with rotating movements. The open mode wheels with hardfacing are equipped with hard metal picks, ripper chisels or scraper tools, depending on the soil type. For Pipe Jacking in rock, the machine is equipped with a cutterhead with cutter disks.

Sewage tunnel in Linz, Austria
A sewage tunnel running underneath the river Danube was needed in the port district of the Austrian city of Linz. The customer decides to use a Herrenknecht AVN1600TB to excavate the tunnel of 952m length and a gradient of 10m, cutting through loam, sand, marl and silt. To prevent material from clogging to the cutter wheel, a novel medium-pressure nozzle system was used to cut lumps of clay during excavation. The cutter wheel does not get clogged and the excavation chamber remains free. The tunnel is finished in mid December 2006, in the space of only two months.
Les Sables d´Olonne, France
In the summer of 2007, the construction of a new water treatment plant is finished near Les Sables d´Olonne, on the French Atlantic coast. The treated waste water will be led out into the open sea via 1.5km outflow lines, some of which running underground.
In March 2006, the tunnelling crew starts driving a 623m-long reinforced concrete tube with maximum overburden of 8m through the hard gneis out into the Atlantic. The remaining 950m of the sewage pipe which will have a total length of 1,573m were laid on the ocean floor. After successful completion, on 6th August 2006 the microtunnelling machine is retrieved from the sea with a pontoon.
