Shallow geothermal energy.
Herrenknecht has extended its range by addressing the field of shallow geothermal energy. As well as deep drilling rigs reaching depths of up to 6,000m (HERRENKNECHT VERTICAL GmbH), the product range now includes small drilling rigs for tapping into the earth’s natural heat available near the surface. Geothermal heat is used to heat and cool homes, public, office and industrial buildings. From planning and design through to the construction and operation of the rig, Herrenknecht is the one-stop provider for the whole technology and all advice to its customers at each project stage.
Earth heat (or geothermal energy) is the energy stored in the form of heat below the surface of the earth's land areas. This can be used to heat buildings by means of geothermal energy probes and heat pumps.
For this purpose, geothermal heat probes are inserted into the ground at depths of between 50m and 250m where they absorb heat from the surrounding earth. The ambient temperature at these depths is between 8°C and 14°C. A heat-carrying medium circulates in the installed geothermal energy probes. This medium transports the heat energy in a closed circuit to the heat pump. The heat pump converts the low-level heat energy from the ground into a form suitable for heating. Thus, about 75% of heating energy can be provided from the ground with the remaining 25% provided by electricity.
