A story of success for more than 35 years

________________ From an office in a rented apartment in Lahr to a gigantic factory site in Schwanau and Group locations worldwide in around 30 countries. From the innovative MH1 to MH3 machine types for mechanized pipe jacking to shield machines in XXL format for multi-story road tunnels – these are the milestones in a fascinating company history.

After 2011 and 2013, for the third time in a row Herrenknecht takes first place in the brand ranking for German hidden champions. The last of 8 TBMs completes its mission at the Crossrail project in London - a total of 42 kilometers of high quality tunnels have been created under one of the world's busiest cities. A Mixshield with a diameter of 13.6 meters reaches the target shaft on the European side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul at one of the world's most challenging projects ever, the Eurasia Tunnel. Martin Herrenknecht is awarded with the most significant German technology prize, the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring.


Herrenknecht presents the first of 21 EPB Shields for construction of the new metro system in Doha to the client Qatar Rail. TBM "Suse" starts its first drive at the Fildertunnel for the prestige project Stuttgart21. Herrenknecht expands its top management: As of August 1, 2014, Günter Richter, Ulrich Schaffhauser and Michael Sprang are members of the expanded Board of Management of Herrenknecht AG. Workshop acceptance of the world's largest TBM to excavate a road tunnel beneath a sea strait in Hong Kong takes place at the Herrenknecht plant in Guangzhou - record diameter: 17.6 meters. A multi-mode TBM finishes its unique tunnel drive at Lake Mead in Las Vegas, USA - never before has a tunnel boring machine had to withstand a water pressure of 15 bar.

A milestone in mechanized tunnelling: the final breakthrough at the Hallandsås-Tunnel.


Under the motto "Pioneering Underground Technologies", at bauma 2013, Herrenknecht is presenting the latest tunnelling technology focusing on the Group's eight most important areas of application. The new Pipe Express® method is presented at the outside area and wins the "bauma Innovation Award". In October, Herrenknecht additionally receives the renowned "IPLOCA New Technologies Award" for the development of the innovative technology. With final breakthrough at the Hallandsås Tunnel in Sweden, an important milestone at one of the world's most challenging tunnel projects was successfully completed.


German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, visits on of the two Herrenknecht plants in Guangzhou, China together with the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. Herrenknecht AG invites guests to an exclusive evening gala on the occasion of a milestone birthday of Dr.-Ing. E. h. Martin Herrenknecht and the 35th company anniversary. The Board of the Management's motto "Think positive. Together we are building our future" is taken up for the first time in a genuine Herrenknecht song. For the construction of the first line of the Kuala Lumpur Mass Rapid Transit System, the client orders 6 innovative Variable Density TBMs. After 14 years, Prof. Dr. h.c. Lothar Späth resigns from his office as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Herrenknecht AG for reasons of age. He is succeeded by the Chairman of the Board of Management of Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, Hans-Jörg Vetter as the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

In March, the tunnel construction industry and the public look to Switzerland and to Herrenknecht. The final breakthrough at the Gotthard Base Tunnel takes place in Sedrun. Four Gripper TBMs from Herrenknecht have driven a total of 85 kilometers for the longest tunnel in the world. The company Herrenknecht takes first place in a brand ranking for hidden champions, commissioned and published by the Wirtschaftswoche magazine. Herrenknecht develops the eco-friendly and cost-efficient Pipe Express® method. The practical viability of the semi-trenchless pipeline installation method is tested intensely at the Schwanau factory site.

With a diameter of 15.55m, "Martina" was the worldwide largest TBM for a road tunnel in Italy.


A new diameter record is achieved in Turkmenistan in trenchless pipeline installation using Herrenknecht HDD equipment: the Amudarja River is crossed beneath with a diameter of 72 inches (1.8m) at a length of 1.7 kilometers. In December, Herrenknecht delivers the by then largest tunnel boring machine in the world (Ø 15.55m) for a twin-tube road tunnel in Italy.


Dr.-Ing. E. h. Martin Herrenknecht is entered in the Handelsblatt German Industry Hall of Fame and receives the Moles Award of the US heavy construction industry. Tunnelling at the northern lots at the Gotthard Base Tunnel is completed - 6 months ahead of schedule and with daily performances of up to 56 meters of drilled and secured tunnel. A world record in hard rock. The new business field Mining is established within the Business Unit Traffic Tunnelling at the Schwanau company headquarters.


The contract for the delivery of the 100th tunnel boring machine to China is signed. In May and September, two Herrenknecht world-record TBMs complete tunnelling in Shanghai one year ahead of schedule. The Board of Management of Herrenknecht AG celebrates the 30th anniversary of the company with 2,000 politicians and business people and the company's employees.


Herrenknecht looks back on 30 years of successful history. The subsidiary "Herrenknecht Formwork" is founded, in China opens another assembly plant in Chengdu (Sichuan province). In the financial year 2007, order inflow passes the 1 billion euro mark for the first time. The newly developed Direct Pipe® method combines the advantages of the tried-and-tested microtunnelling and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) methods, which opens up new application potentials.

Herrenknecht presents its first innovative deep drilling rig for geothermal energy to the public. Two new, world-record TBMs with a diameter if 15.43 meters each are used in Shanghai, China. A new assembly plant is opened in Nansha (Guangdong province) in China.


Herrenknecht achieves revenue of more than 500 million euros for the first time.
For a road tunnel in Madrid, Herrenknecht builds the then largest tunnel boring machine in the world (diameter 15.20 meters). The first manufacturing location for the assembly of tunnelling equipment in China is opened in Guangzhou.


Herrenknecht establishes a subsidiary in Singapore for the Asian-Pacific market, which later develops into the Asian headquarters.


Herrenknecht receives orders totaling 100 million euros from Asia, which has become the second most important sales market for mechanized tunnelling technology following Europe.
Four Herrenknecht Gripper TBMs drive through the St. Gotthard, building the longest traffic tunnel in the world with 2 x 57 kilometers.


In February, Herrenknecht receives two further machine orders for the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Martin Herrenknecht celebrates the company's 25th anniversary together with 1,000 employees and 35,000 guests.


Herrenknecht AG receives the order to manufacture, deliver and assemble two Gripper TBMs for the new Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland.


In the financial year 2000, order inflow reaches a new record level of 198.3 million euros.
In the meantime, Herrenknecht has become market leader in mechanized tunnel technology.
