Energy-efficient tunnel boring machines
Herrenknecht also assumes responsibility in terms of energy efficiency. In times of scarce fossil fuels and continuously rising energy prices, the worldwide demand for innovative technologies that reduce energy consumption is increasing. Therefore, Herrenknecht AG is a member of the "Energy Efficiency - Made in Germany" initiative, which was established by the Federal Government as an energy efficiency export initiative. Our products are developed taking into consideration energy efficiency and savings in energy costs.
Herrenknecht relies on deep geothermal energy
Our products create essential prerequisites for the targeted exploration of energy sources. Herrenknecht is strongly committed to the development of geothermal energy with new technology, events and the financing of a professorship for technical petrophysics in Karlsruhe. Geothermal energy is a decentralized energy source; electricity and/or heat can be generated there where it is needed. And no high-voltage transmission lines of thousands of kilometers are necessary. The deep drilling rigs made by Herrenknecht Vertical GmbH have drilled down to a depth of 5,000 meters so far. The "Terra Invader 350" drilling rigs have been used successfully in different projects in the Bavarian municipalities of Mauerstetten, Dürrnhaar, Kirchstockach, Kirchweidach and also in Hanover (Lower Saxony). These are research as well as power and heating plant projects.
In-house renewable energy production
At its headquarters in Schwanau, Herrenknecht has established its own reference project: a near-surface geothermal plant for heating and cooling our administrative buildings. It will produce 324,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year, thus saving 31 metric tonnes of CO2 (compared to conventional heating systems). Furthermore, two photovoltaic plants on the roofs of the workshops have been producing approximately 251,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year since 2005 and 2007.
