Geothermal energy is the energy that is stored in the Earth in the form of heat beneath the Earth's crust, which can be exploited using geothermal probes and heat pumps. Geothermal probes are introduced at depths of down to between 50 and 250 meters, where temperatures of 8°C to 14°C can be found. A transport medium circulating within the probes transfers the heat energy in a closed circuit to a heat pump. The heat pump converts the low-temperature thermal energy from the underground into heating energy. Around 75 percent of the energy can be utilized, and around 25 percent is supplied as electrical current. Cooling can also be achieved in summer using the same principle.
