Yewai–Kasheli–Mulund Water Tunnel Project

To strengthen Mumbai’s long-term water supply system, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (MCGM/BMC) is constructing a major underground water conveyance tunnel network connecting Yewai, Tarali and Kasheli in Bhiwandi (Thane) with Mulund. The project is designed to transport treated water safely through deep underground hard rock, significantly reducing leakage, transmission losses and maintenance requirements while improving the reliability of water distribution across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Herrenknecht is supplying three 5.33m-diameter Main Beam Gripper TBMs, specifically designed for hard-rock excavation across the project's various tunnel sections. One machine is assigned to the Yewai–Tarali section, another to the Tarali–Kasheli section, and the third to the Kasheli–Mulund Octroi Naka section. Together, the three machines will contribute to forming an important underground water conveyance corridor. The TBMs are designed to excavate through hard basalt formations totaling over 21km. Herrenknecht also provides the necessary conveyor systems for continuous muck removal during tunnelling operations, supporting high productivity and efficient excavation throughout the project.
