Barcelona Sabadell
Spain, Sabadell
2010 – 2013

With a population of 200,000, the city of Sabadell has several suburban railway links directly to Barcelona which is around 20 kilometers to the south east. The S1 line coming from Barcelona is however to be extended in the direction of the northern suburbs as of "Sabadell Estació" station. Up to 7 million passengers a year are anticipated for the new section.

The construction consortium ordered an EPB Shield from Herrenknecht with a diameter of 6.7 meters to tunnel through the twin-tube section extending 2 x 2.9 kilometers under Sabadell. A conveyor belt supplied by the H+E subsidiary was responsible for carrying off the soil excavated by the machine. From the launch shaft at Parc del Nord, the EPB Shield in the twin tubes advanced by up to 46.2 meters a day in the direction of "Sabadell Estació" where the final breakthrough was celebrated on November 5, 2013.
