To better control the annual impacts of the heavy rains and severe typhoons, Hong Kong developed a flood prevention program. The "Lai Chi Kok Transfer Scheme" was drawn up in order to discharge the huge amounts of rainwater via a drainage tunnel into the sea.
The S-536 Herrenknecht Mixshield drove the tunnel with a total length of 3,390 meters from March 2010 until December 2011. The machine coped with the granite and encountered fault zones as well as zones of high groundwater pressure. Another section of Hong Kong's flood protection programm is the "West Drainage Tunnel", excavated by two Herrenknecht Double Shield TBMs.
