Producing sustainable energy from water
Exploiting great potential

Electricity generation using hydropower will continue to offer great potential in the future. Most regions use only a small percentage of the technically possible energy production from water.

Water cleans the air

A growing share of the energy mix: hydropower is always available, ensures independence from fossil fuels and reduces CO2 emissions.

We are committed to sustainable energy

Producing energy from hydropower requires tunnelling technology that bores along the specified alignment with the utmost precision. That's why we are your partner for small and large hydropower projects.

Energy demand is rising worldwide, so renewables are becoming increasingly important. Hydropower is already being used intensively today, but will also offer immense potential in the future. We combine our know-how for the energy of tomorrow: with Herrenknecht's tunnelling technology, shafts and galleries for hydroelectric power plants can be created with absolute precision – in various diameters and inclinations. That's why contractors worldwide rely on our project-specific customized technologies that lay the foundation for fast, smooth and efficient project completion. Herrenknecht machines can cope with tight space constraints, can be used in all geologies and build high quality tunnel structures with maximum safety. Exactly where they are needed.

We let the water flow

Around the globe, more than a hundred kilometers of tunnel tubes for the expansion and new construction of hydropower plants have already been built using a wide variety of tunnelling technologies from Herrenknecht. For your project this means:

  • vast experience and expertise
  • top technology of the highest quality
  • fully-customized, innovative solutions
  • smooth progress and expert troubleshooting
  • comprehensive service on- and off-site
  • close teamwork with all project partners
  • maximum reliability from start to finish

In short: we do everything to ensure your project runs as smoothly as possible while keeping to budget and to schedule.

Example jobsite overview

The efficient operation of hydropower plants often requires a wide variety of tunnels, galleries and shafts.  With our broad portfolio of tunnelling technology, these infrastructures are created with maximum safety for people and technology – always exactly along the specified alignment.

1
Gripper TBM

A specially equipped Gripper TBM is tunnelling the service gallery to the turbine cavern inside the mountain. A double anti-reverse locking system and special developments in logistics allow for gradients of up to 40 degrees.

2
Raise Boring Rig

The Raise Boring Rig is drilling shafts with a depth reaching 2,000 meters and diameters of up to 7 meters. Thanks to the rig's modular design the footprint is very small.

3
Double Shield TBM

The Double Shield TBM is excavating the tube of an intake tunnel. The machine achieves high advance rates in stable rock thanks to continuous tunnelling and provides safe working conditions even in geological fault zones.
