Panama Metro Linea 1
Panama, Panama City
2012 – 2013

Since December 19, 2012, the first section of metro Line 1 from "12 de Octubre" to "Iglesia del Carmen" stations in Panama City has been completed. The first of two EPB Shields successfully achieved breakthrough on this day. Only three months later, on March 16, 2013, the second breakthrough was celebrated. The first metro line in Panama City will have a total length of 13.6 kilometers - 6.3 kilometers of which are being driven by the two Herrenknecht EPB Shields. With a shield diameter of 9.73 meters they are excavating a tunnel accommodating two-track metro traffic. The machines only started tunnelling in January and April 2012, respectively.

The huge growth in population over the past years posed enormous challenges for the administration of Panama City. The entire infrastructure has to be analyzed in order to lastingly improve its services for inhabitants and the economy. Herrenknecht technology is also being used in Panama City for the construction of an efficient sewage system.
