GIPL, short for Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania, will go down in the history of Lithuania‘s energy independence as it will connect the Baltic gas market with the pan-European one. Projects of extraordinary importance often mean overcoming obstacles, as in this case the crossing under the Czarna Hańcza River. After the originally planned use of an HDD rig proved unworkable, Herrenknecht supplied a 28" Direct Pipe AVNS machine with a jet pump. With this technology, despite difficult geology – sand and rubble with individual boulders – the 320 m drilling for the gas pipeline (OD 740 mm) was successful. The site crew completed this section of the major project on June 5, 2021.
