Beach Tunnelling

The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were just around the corner and a new sewer line between the suburbs of  Ipanema and Copacabana urgently needed to be installed. For a 650 meter long section in a densely built up area, requiring it to be completed without intermediate shafts, a Herrenknecht AVN Machine was chosen. Using the pipe jacking method with intermediate jacking stations, from the launch shaft on Ipanema Beach to the target shaft at Copacabana Beach the site crew only took about two months from late November 2013 to early February 2014. Both the predominantly sandy subsoil at the beginning of the advance and the rocky ground towards the end were easily handled by the mixed soil cutterhead provided by Herrenknecht. Thanks to careful preliminary investigations and planning by the contractor, the drive safely passed all the lines and pipes already installed underground. The construction project was awarded the ISTT No-Dig Award 2016 in the "Project Award (New Installation)" category.
