The Mediterranean island of Corsica procures its entire electricity supplies from the French mainland. To prevent power failures caused by storms, the first hydropower plant was built directly on the island.
To this aim, a Herrenknecht Gripper TBM with a diamter of 3.5 meters drove a tunnel with a total length of 5,800 meters with monthly best rates of 476 meters in hard rock by October 2010. At the end of this tunnel a 27-MW turbine was installed for more electrical independence of the Corsicans from the French mainland.
