Route 2020 Project
United Arab Emirates, Dubai
2017 – 2018

The next World Expo will open its doors in Dubai in 2020 where the Red Line Metro is being extended in order to link the EXPO exhibition site spanning 430 hectares to the city. Seven new stations and 15 kilometers of new network routes – of which 3,200 meters are underground – are being built.

The “Wugeisha EXPO 2020” tunnel boring machine (TBM) is responsible for approximately 2.3 kilometer of the 3.2 kilometer long underground section between Al Furjan and Dubai Investment Park (DIP) - Green Community. Tunnelling with Wugeisha, Herrenknecht EPB type TBM, commenced in October 2017. Over the subsequent seven months and after a slow start the Wugeisha achieved an average of 13 meters of tunnel per day, at depth to tunnel crown of between 2 to 30 meters. The machine has achieved its final breakthrough on June 5, 2018, and concluded the bored tunnelling works on the project.

The new Red Line Metro extension links the EXPO 2020 to Nakheel arbor and Tower Station. Its trial run is due to start in February 2020.
