The Palm Islands
United Arab Emirates, Jumeirah
2005

"The Palm Islands" are three gigantic construction projects, that have been labled as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". Off the coast of Dubai, the islands are man-made and have the shape of huge plam trees and "palm branches", protected by a semicircular breakwater.

The construction works have advanced the most on "Palm Jumeirah" with a Herrenknecht AVND2500AH as a part of the team. Through sand, coral and limestone the machine excavated two tunnel, each of a length of about 700 meters. Inside these tunnels, utility lines for electricity, telephone and water were to be installed running in a slight curve from one of the palm branches to the breakwater.
