Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok Link

Full service support for the market launch of a product innovation

The task

The major Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link project in Hong Kong links the airport with the Tuen Mun city district via a gigantic twin-tube road tunnel under the sea. The high safety requirements for vehicle traffic demand cross passages at regular intervals as escape and rescue tunnels between the tunnel tubes. Building such cross passages under water pressure is very complex and expensive to realize, e.g. using freezing technologies. This is why Herrenknecht develops a new method for the project in Hong Kong, based on tried-and-tested AVN technology. Herrenknecht supplies the customer with experienced service personnel as initial tunnelling support.

  • Project name: Hong Kong Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link (TMCLKL)
  • Application: Rescue and escape tunnels (cross passages)
  • Tunnel length: 44 cross passages x 14 m
  • Geology: Marine sediments, granite, clay, silt, sand, gravel
  • Groundwater pressure of up to 4.5 bar
  • Contractor: Dragages-Bouygues JV
  • Machine type: 2 x AVN3000
  • Excavation diameter: 3,605 mm
  • Tunnel lining: Pipe jacking

The Herrenknecht service solution

The Dragages-Bouygues JV and Herrenknecht launch a joint pilot project in the form of the new method for building cross passages. What’s more, the structures need to be realized during tunnelling in the large tunnels. Accordingly, project and realization planning as well as technical design are marked by extensive engineering expertise and experience. In order to ensure success even during tunnelling, very experienced Herrenknecht personnel is on site at all times who are also in regular contact with experts in Schwanau. For each shift, Herrenknecht provides two supervisors and four service technicians as well as a TBM operator. Direct communication and short coordination routes ensure that a steep learning curve is achieved even during the course of the initial cross passages. Average construction time for each cross passage is just under 21 days, which complies with the requisite parameters. Proof of the fact that permanent service support is a decisive factor for handling pioneer projects.

Project advantages

  • In-depth engineering know-how and experienced service personnel permit top results when combined with newly-developed pioneer technology, even for complex projects.

  • Direct communication on site helps to accelerate solution processes, thereby ensuring steep learning curves to the advantage of the project.

  • Thanks to good partnerships between construction companies and machine manufacturers, new technologies can tap future areas of application.
